Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate protective effects of extracts of cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus, against the hepatotoxicity induced by TCDD in 7-week-old Sprague-Dawley male rats. Twenty eight male rats were divided into 4 groups: normal control group received vehicle and saline; TCDD-treated group received single intraperitoneal injection of TCDD (60 ¥ìg/kg) and saline; preventive groups received cricket extracts (100 and 200 mg/kg) for 2 weeks before TCDD treatment. The livers of TCDD-treated rats appeared a severe hypertrophy and changed to yellow brown color in gross finding, and the weights increased. However, these findings were protected by treatment of cricket extracts (200 mg/kg). The elevated serum activities of alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance and phosphatidylcholine hydroperoxide due to TCDD were significantly decreased by treatment of cricket extracts. There were cytoplasmic vacuolizations and inflammatory cell infiltration around portal triad in the liver of TCDD-treated rats. However, the lesions were inhibited by treatment of cricket extracts (200 mg/kg). These findings indicate that cricket extracts may have a protective effect aganist TCDD-induced hepatotoxicity in rats.
